"Please Mr. Postman" is a song recorded by the girl group The Marvelettes, and was released as their debut single on August 21, 1961, through the Motown-owned Tamla label. The song was written by Georgia Dobbins, William Garrett, Freddie Gorman, Brian Holland and Robert Bateman. Commercially, "Please Mr. Postman" became a huge hit. The single was Motown's first song to reach number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, in addition, it also topped the Billboard Hot R&B Songs chart.
"Please Mr. Postman" has been covered several times over the years. In 1963 he was on the album With the BEATLES by the British band The Beatles.
In 1974, it was released as a single by the American duo The Carpenters, taking "Please Mr. Postman" again to the top of the Billboard Hot 100.
The Marvelettes recording had the singer Gladys Horton as a soloist, and tells the story of hoping that the postman will bring a letter from her boyfriend, who is away at war. The original recording was backed by The Funk Brothers, including Marvin Gaye on drums.
The songwriting credits for "Please Mr. Postman" seem to have changed over the years. The original version has credited "Dobbins/Garett/Brianbert" as songwriters and "Brianbert" as producer. On the Beatles album it is only credited to Brian Holland.
The 1974 Beatles' entire discography book, All Together Now, the song ended up being credited to Holland, Bateman and Berry Gordy. In 1992, the box set Hitsville USA. Motown: The Singles Collection features Dobbins, Garrett, Holland, Bateman and Gorman as songwriters. As of the 2006 Hall of Fame credited songwriters for "Please Mr. Postman" only Holland, Bateman, and Gorman appear.
