Reasons Paul McCartney Broke New Ground with The Beatles' "All My Loving"

The Beatles' more avant-garde songs are frequently cited by admirers as their breakthroughs. The Beatles' "All My Loving" was written by Paul McCartney in a way that was entirely unfamiliar to him. It was "unfortunate," according to John Lennon, since Paul wrote the most of the song by himself.

Paul McCartney stated in his 1997 book Paul McCartney: Many Years From Now that "All My Loving" was a bit of an exception. He remembered, "It was the first song I'd ever written the words first." "I always wrote some sort of accompaniment before writing words." Since then, I've scarcely done anything at all.

Paul gave an explanation of how "All My Loving" came to be. "I started with the words because we were traveling to a gig on a tour bus," he explained. "I was thinking of a little Western and country song." Although Paul wanted "All My Loving" to have a country feel to it, the finished song is just another of the Fab Four's early bubblegum rock 'n' roll hits. It has a similar sound to previous straightforward Beatles singles from 1962 to 1964, such "I Want to Hold Your Hand," "She Loves You," and "Love Me Do."

Paul thought back to the environment in which he wrote "All My Loving." "There were always these lovely big empty backstage areas when we played the Moss Empire [theater] circuit," he remarked. "Now, every location is a bingo hall.

"I remember being in one of these large backstage areas when we got to the gig, so I had my instrument with me," he remarked. "It was probably with our road manager; I didn't have a guitar. I remember learning the tune on the piano." It was a good show tune that performed well in person.
An interview from 1980 can be found in the book All We Are Saying: The Last Major Interview with John Lennon and Yoko Ono. John Lennon was questioned about "All My Loving" in it. John claimed that the song belonged to Paul, which the singer of "Power to the People" thought was "unfortunate."
