Silverchair was an Australian rock band from 1992 to 2011. The band broke through in the 90s with heavy grunge-like rock, but their style shifted more towards art rock on later albums. In 1992, Silverchair was formed in the coastal town of Newcastle, Australia, about 100 kilometers north of Sydney. The band was then still called "the Innocent Criminals". At the age of 14, Daniel Johns (guitar, vocals), Chris Joannou (bass) and Ben Gillies (drums) managed to break through to the general public. The band won a competition called the "Pick Me" contest, organized by the radio station "Triple J". Their first single was "Tomorrow" and with that the trio scored a big hit. Due to their very young age, it was only possible to perform during holidays and weekends, because on a normal weekday they should have been in school. The band soon released an album called "Frogstomp". The comparison with Nirvana was quickly made, especially because singer Daniel resembled Kurt Cobain according to many (partly because of his long blond hair). Two years after the release of "Frogstomp" the long-awaited successor was released. This album was called "Freakshow" and was even more intense than the first album, although pop influences were also clearly audible. The band was characterized by its dark sound and outspoken lyrics. Finally released from school, there was enough room to perform.

The band traveled all over the world and played at several major festivals. After the release of "Freakshow" and the long tour, the band decided to take a year off in 1998. No reason was given until singer/guitarist Johns announced that he suffered from the eating disorder anorexia nervosa. After the treatment, they started working on a successor to "Freakshow". The successor, which was given the name "Neon Ballroom", was characterized by melodic pop/rock songs. The unique style of the music appealed to many, and the album became a big hit, especially in his home country Australia. Many songs had a personal meaning for Daniel, such as the single "Ana's Song" in which Daniel speaks out about his eating disorder. Another tour followed, the longest they had ever done. They played for the general public for more than a year. After "Neon Ballroom", the band members decided to take it easier. Daniel worked on a solo project with DJ Paul Mac, while the other band members sought relaxation. In March 2002, the follow-up to "Neon Ballroom" was released, for the first time only in Australia. The follow-up was called "Diorama". For the fans of Silverchair it was a big change. Daniel had already warned that "a lot of fans would probably drop out, but that a lot of new fans would join". The record was even more innovative than "Neon Ballroom" because of the different styles brought together. In Australia, the band won a number of awards for the album.
After a short break, Daniel picked up his solo career again with DJ Paul Mac, and released an album under the name "the Dissociatives". In 2007, a successor to "Diorama" was released after five years, entitled "Young Modern". In Australia, it is the best-selling Silverchair album since "Frogstomp". On January 4, 2008, Daniel Johns and Natalie Imbruglia announced in an official statement that they were separating after four years of marriage. The main reason is that they lived in different parts of the world due to their respective careers (Daniel mainly in Australia, Natalie mainly in England) and had therefore grown apart. In 2009, it was announced that Silverchair was working on a new album. Good news for fans, since no new material has been released since 'Young Modern'. In May 2010, the band will perform five shows at the 'Groovin the Moo' festival in Australia. They will also perform at the 'Bass in the Grass' festival. It will be Silverchair's last feat. On May 25, 2011, a year after the last performances, Silverchair announces that they are calling it quits for the time being.
