In the final days of 1980, Paul McCartney called John Lennon for no special reason, just to hear his voice. They ended up talking for almost an hour, sharing memories, jokes, and a closeness that seemed to be returning at last. John told him, “We’re still family,” with a warmth that surprised Paul. Before hanging up, John added, “Think of me now and then, old friend.” Three days later, Paul awoke to the news of the murder. Paul stood frozen by his kitchen window, replaying every word. He drove to Abbey Road, placed his hand on the “Hey Jude” piano, and cried. He wished he had said “I love you” more clearly. But he believes John knew.
