In 1964, Paul McCartney woke up in a London attic with a melody playing in his mind. It was so clear, so beautiful, he couldn’t believe it was his. He ran to the piano and quickly played the tune so it wouldn’t disappear. Unsure of the lyrics, he filled in silly words:
“Scrambled eggs, oh my baby, how I love your legs…”

For weeks, Paul asked everyone he knew—his bandmates, producers, even music executives—if they’d heard the tune before. No one had. Slowly, he accepted the melody had come from a dream—and it was entirely his.

That melody became Yesterday.

With just Paul’s voice, an acoustic guitar, and a string quartet, it became a hauntingly simple song about heartbreak and memory. Released in 1965, it topped charts and has since been covered over 2,000 times.

From a dream in a quiet bedroom to one of the most iconic songs in history—Yesterday came out of nowhere… and the world never forgot it.
