The Rutles were sued by ATV Music, the owner of the publishing rights to the Beatles catalogue, for copyright infringement. Neil Innes, who wrote all the Rutles songs, had to defend his originality in court. He hired a musicologist to prove that his songs were not copies of the Beatles songs, but he still had to settle with ATV out of court for 50% of the royalties and shared songwriting credit.
